County Fare: Berkshire Hills Chorus lands top medals
For the Pittsfield-based Berkshire Hills Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International, victory never sounded so good. The 22-member women’s barbershop vocal group won two medals at the annual Region 1-North Atlantic (http://www.sai-region1.org) competition held April 30 through May 2 in Springfield.
The group placed first in the Division A (under 30 members) contest, and out of 16 participating groups, earned a first-place medal for “Most Improved” group.
For 45 years, the Berkshire Hills Chorus has traveled around Berkshire County providing musical entertainment for the local community. The chorus, directed by Gail Wojtkowiak, draws its members from all over the county, and the members’ ages range from 18 to 70 years old. The group sings a cappella in four-part harmony, barbershop style, and its repertoire includes ballads, up-tunes, show tunes, holiday songs, pop songs and patriotic songs.
Berkshire Hills has performed at the Berkshire Athenaeum, the Red Lion Inn, the Norman Rockwell Museum, Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield’s Downtown Third Thursdays, the downtown North Adams Celebration, WGBY’s “Together in Song” competition, the Pittsfield Suns games, as well as area nursing and assisted living facilities.
